Dog Canis Major

It is sometimes called the dog with the blazing face”. Canis Major seems to cross the sky in pursuit of the hare, represented by the constellation Lepus under Orion’s feet.

Sirius the brightest star in this constellation and is also called the Dog Star, This star is also attributed to Isis and her counterpart Osiris is attributed to Orion. These two deities are central to the Egyptian cosmogony.

In Greek Mythology, Canis Major represented the dog Laelaps, a gift from Zeus to Europa. Aratus referred to Canis Major as the guard-dog of Orion, following on the heels of its master and standing on its hind legs with Sirius carried in its jaws.
